McClouth Trade

I know that the trade is long past, but I came across this song and found it interesting. This video is from Jesse Andrews, which Dejan Kovacevic of the PBC Blog reported in a post today. After trying to find out the name of the kid who wrote it, he actually heard from him.

It took me a while, but I just noticed that you included my Nate McLouth video in your blog. That's amazing! I'm a big fan of yours, and it feels pretty wild to have done a thing that found its way into your reporting. Thanks so much!

I'll note in passing that the irony of the video is that I actually thought (and still think) that the McLouth trade was a smart move. It was really just the fact that Nate's teammates were upset about it, not to mention Nate himself, that made me feel justified in writing a sappy melodramatic song (and also, of course, Nate being one of my favorite Pirates).

Do you have any idea of whether Nate himself knows this video is out there?

I understand the logistics behind this trade. Andrew McCutchen was waiting in the wings and probably ready to step in. He is also 22 years old and McLouth is 27. By the way, McCutchen has shown some promise since he was called up after the trade. However, I can also see why fans are angry. Here's another Pirates "star" that was traded away for prospects. Mind you, prospects that the Pirates brass called "above average". Is Nate McLouth a major league star? No, but he was the best player on our team and one of the three players that Dave Littlefield...sorry for that Freudian slip, Neal Huntington said he wanted to build the franchise around. Will the Pirates ever win? Only time will tell, but when moves like this are consistently being made, it's doubtful.

Captain Compete

For Halloween 2008, Will Ferrell brought to life a super-hero named Captain Compete in order to motivate the USC Trojan football team. I'm not a USC fan, nor does this have anything to do with Pittsburgh sports. However, I thought it was funny and oddly inspiring.

Penguins
How well are these guys playing? I have NEVER seen any team in any sport dominate like the Pens have in this series. Malkin. That's all I have to say. He has stepped up his game and is finally performing on the level everyone knew he was capable of. Looks like this will be a sweep, but never count your chickens before the eggs hatch. Go Pens!

In Response To Yesterday's Blog

Yesterday, I went off on a rant aimed at James Harrison. http://mypittsburghsportsblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/is-james-harrison-really-that-dumb.htmldumb.htmldumb.html. I questioned his intelligence, and deservedly so. The winner of the Super Bowl is granted the right to meet the President. We won. So, we get to go. Had the Cardinals won, they would be making the trip. I really don't think James Harrison is that ignorant. However, his comments made him sound classless and egotistical. Harrison said,

"If you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don’t win the Super Bowl. So, as far as I’m concerned, he would have invited Arizona if they had won. I don’t feel the need to actually go. I don’t feel like it’s that big a deal to me.’’

If it's not a big deal to him, that's fine, but don't phrase it like that. The only reason any team goes to the White House is because they won the championship or accomplished some other spectacular feat in their sport. What makes the Steelers any different? I love the Steelers as much as anyone else. I am a Western PA guy. I grew up with the Steelers, as well as the other college and pro teams in the area. I have a passion for and follow all of the teams. But, if we put things into perspective, the Steelers are just a football team. Now, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is putting out an article stating that Harrison's fear of flying may be the reason he does not want to go, but judging by Harrison's comments, flying has nothing to do with it. http://www.pittsburghpostgazette.com/pg/09140/971339-66.stm It sounds like the Post-Gazette is trying to dissolve the story because it has become national news. It wasn't a big deal last time because Harrison was just a special teams player, not the NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Also, Harrison didn't make such foolish and absurd comments after Super Bowl XL. Listen, it is an honor to be granted a chance to meet the leader of our country, especially when the President is close with the owner of your football team. If he doesn't think so, then I guess he is doing the right thing by staying home. Many people don't see this as a big deal. So, I will leave you with one final question. If you had the chance to go to the White House and meet our President, would you go?

Is James Harrison Really That Dumb?

Well...it's been a long time since my last blog and quite a bit has happened. The Pirates have put on quite an offensive clinic as of late. However, the pitching still can't hold its own. And, apparently, the Buccos have the inside track on a 16 year-old Dominican phenom named Miguel Angel Sano. The Pens took it to the Capitals in game seven and Sid showed why he is better than Ovechkin. They also won game one of the Eastern Conference finals yesterday against the Carolina Hurricanes. While all of this is well and good, this post has nothing to do with any of that. I am dedicating this post to James Harrison.


Steelers
Well, I'm sure that you have heard the comments by now. I mean, is he really that dumb? He can't be, right? Doesn't he know that it is tradition for the winning team to visit the White House? Of course he would have invited the Cardinals if they won! That's what is supposed to happen! It has nothing to do with the President being a fan of the team. Every year, the winner of the Super Bowl, as well as the champion of most professional sports, goes to the White House. That has been happening FOREVER! What, this guy goes from undrafted to NFL Defensive Player of the Year and thinks he is bigger than Obama?! HE IS OUR NATION'S FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT! James Harrison has a chance to meet a man who has made history over the past couple of months. He is the leader of our country. He is one of the most inspiring people in the United Sates. Who is James Harrison? He is THE example that as soon as you get the fame, you lose touch with reality. Obama appointed Irish Ambassador Dan Rooney should talk some sense into him. Go to the White House James or give me your ticket because I would love to go. What an egotistical jackass!

Quality vs. Quantity

Penguins
As I was watching the game last night, something seemed to be happening. It seemed the the Pens were getting more opportunities to score, but the Caps were getting better opportunities. One thing is for certain, the Caps took full advantage of the opportunities they had. Ovechkin definitely carries that team, as made evident by the hat trick he had last night. When he's on the ice, his team steps up. It's like his team is trying to play up to his level. Sydney Crosby also had a hat trick last night. But, it seems no matter how well he plays, he doesn't make his teammates any better. He is leaps and bounds ahead of his teammates. All, except for Malkin, who seems to be taking a break this series. There is no way Ovechkin should be able to out-duel Sid and Geno, but he does time and time again. It looks like this will be a short series for the Pens...not because of the lack of talent, though. It is because the Caps just want it more. It is sad to say this and I hope I am wrong, but I can't see this series going more than five games. Please prove me wrong!

Steelers

The Steelers officially released Larry Foote yesterday. I wrote about this a week ago. But, the Steelers attempted to test the trade waters one more time before making it official. I liked what Foote was able to do in his time here and enjoyed watching his development. I do believe he will be missed from a leadership standpoint. However, he was stuck in a role and even stated that it would only be a matter of time before Lawrence Timmons takes his spot. Timmons' time is now. He is a great athlete that has size, strength, and speed. He will be able to play all three downs, where Foote came off the field in passing situations. It will be interesting to see if there is any drop off at the position this year. Larry Foote would like to be an every down player and has stated that he has interest in going home to Detroit. The Lions could sure use all the help they can get and would get a leader, veteran, and talented player if they are willing to spend the money on Foote. Judging by their record last year, I don't think they would mind writing that check. Good luck to Larry Foote! I hope he gets to go back home.

Madden NFL 10

I am very excited for the new Madden game to come out. I will be pre-ordering it in the near future. I, however, have a Wii. I hope that they will be doing quite a bit to change the game from the past couple of years. I was thinking about selling my Wii on eBay and using the money to buy an Xbox 360. Nevertheless, Jon Robinson of ESPN wrote an article about some of the new features for the game called, 'Madden NFL 10': Five Things to Know. These features probably do not apply to the Wii version, but sound pretty cool for the Xbox 360 and, possibly, PS3. Check out the link if you would like to start getting into "Madden Mode":

Pirates
It looks like the Pirates are up to their old tricks. I you think about it, this is the time of the season where the downfall usually begins. I watched the end of the game last night. Man, do pictures say a thousand words. The camera panned over to Paul Maholm as he watched his lead and win get thrown away by the bullpen. And, why was Moss in right field? The Buccos went into last night's game with an 0-15 losing streak against the Brewers. Brandon moss is not hitting! Craig Monroe is the only chance of real power coming out of right field. PUT HIM IN! It is becoming clear that the Pirates are not willing to play the hot bats. Monroe is the best chance they have at some offense right now. It looks like we're aiming for .500 again. With all of the success that the Steelers and Penguins, and even the Passion, have had recently, the Pirates don't deserve to carry the city name anymore. I'm calling them to "Hope Pirates" because they steal what little hope fans still have left. Here's to mediocrity.

The Steelers have just released Larry Foote. Are you kidding me?! The move was made due to economics and the desire to move Lawrence Timmons into the starting lineup. It's hard for me to imagine this, but I guess you have to trust their decision. They seem to know when it is time to get rid of a linebacker. I wonder who the backup will be now. Steelers

The Steelers announced their first round pick, Evander "Ziggy" Hood, yesterday. Ziggy will be a backup this year, barring an injury to the starters. However, the Steelers like to give their starters breaks during the game to keep them fresh. So, we should see Ziggy on the field quite a bit. Also, the Steelers may use him as an inside rusher in their nickel and dime defenses.

The Steelers also met yesterday with free agent wide receiver Ashley Lelie. Lelie is a former first round pick of the Denver Broncos. He is a veteran deep threat averaging 17.3 yards per catch over his seven NFL seasons. He is also 6'3" and may provide jump ball receiver in goal line situations. The meeting was said to have gone well and the Steelers and Lelie's agent, Peter Schaffer , will continue to have open conversations. The Steelers also drafted Mike Wallace and said that he will compete for the third receiver spot. What does this mean for Limas Sweed? We will see how confident the Steelers are in Sweed if they do or do not sign Lelie.


Pirates

The Pirates have been playing pretty well as of late. Yesterday though, they struggled. After beating down the Padres over the weekend, the Pirates fell to the Brewers yesterday 10-5. I happened to catch the game last night in the bottom of the 8th...just in time to see the bullpen blow the tied game. Tyler Yates gave up a few. Then, John Grabow gave up a few. Finally, Sean Burnett came in for quality control, but by that time, the score was run up to 10-5. The Pirates are still 11-8 this season, which is a plus. This game just goes to show you how important pitching is. The Pirates staff seems to be making improvement and hopefully, last night was just minor setback.

A Great Weekend For Pittsburgh

It was an eventful weekend for Pittsburgh. The Pirates beat the shhhh...uh, crap out of the Padres, with both LaRoches on a bit of a tear in the series. The Penguins came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Flyers and advance in the playoffs. And, finally, the NFL Draft.

Steelers
Below, I have posted an analysis of the Steelers eight draft picks.
If nothing else with these rookies, they bring some interesting nicknames to the team (Ziggy, Sonny, The Tank). It will be interesting to see what this draft class does over the next couple of years.
Today also marked the first day that teams could sign undrafted rookie free agents, and the Steelers did just that. They signed two quarterbacks to join Roethlisberger, Batch, and Dixon. The two QBs are local kid, Kevin McCabe (Pine Richland) of Cal U of PA and Mike Reilly of Central Washington. The Steelers also signed former Blackhawk grad and Pitt long snapper Mark Estermyer. The team expects to sign about a dozen undrafted rookies this week to fill out the roster.

Tomorrow Is The Start Of The 2009 Season

Mock Draft

Some people hate the days leading up to the draft. They hate that there are so many mock drafts. They hate all the hype surrounding it. They hate Kiper and McShay arguing about college "prospect" and how they will project in the pros, because nobody knows for sure. If you have the NFL Network, I'm sure you have seen the top 10 countdowns of the biggest draft steals, best draft classes, and biggest busts. However, I get excited for the draft. I'm a huge Steelers fan, and the draft is the start of the next season for me. This year was the first year that I have done a mock and I think that I've done pretty well with it. The thing with mock drafts is if teams trades picks or if a team takes a shot in the dark on a player, the whole thing is thrown off. Even so, here is my final mock draft:

Yes, in this scenario, I can see the Steelers taking a cornerback with their first pick. I don't think one of the centers makes sense here because I get the feeling that they are high on A.Q. Shipley. Knowing that they will have at least one more round to get a shot at Shipley, they take the best player available at a position of need. Butler is a solid corner, who I think will push Townsend and Gay for playing time. He can also return kicks for the team. With the second round pick, I see the Steelers going with a defensive lineman; possibly Fili Moala or Jarron Gilbert. If Moala is there, they have to take him. If not, Gilbert is big, strong, and athletic, and a great backup plan. As I said in my previous mock draft, look for the Steelers to address depth at positions, such as wide receiver, fullback, and linebacker. Also, don't be surprised if they address quarterback. Charlie Batch can't play forever and I'm not sure that they are sold on Dennis Dixon.

Madden NFL 10

Here we go! I am an avid Madden fan and can't wait for the new game to come out. I will pre-order it so it arrives that day. I just wish Troy wasn't on the cover. I mean, I am a Larry Fitz fan, but Troy plays for us. Hopefully, the Madden curse doesn't strike. I think it's cool though that they put two Pittsburgh guys on the cover.

Penguins

I worry for the Pens. It seems that they are cooling off and the Flyers are figuring out that fighting doesn't equal winning. I predicted this would be over in five. Let's hope they can end it Saturday.

Pirates

Am I the only one who is enjoying the Pirates winning? It seems like every thinks that this streak will blow over. Ok, it probably will. But, I'll believe as long as I can that this might be the season they start to turn things around.

The 2009 NFL schedules were released yesterday. So, in an attempt to predict how the Steelers will fair next season, here is an analysis of their schedule.

Let me start off by saying that the Steelers have the 29th toughest schedule this upcoming season.

1. Thu, Sept. 10 vs. Tennessee Titans 8:30 p.m. - Win. Titans feel the curse of the Terrible Towel.
2. Sun, Sept. 20 at Chicago Bears 4:15 p.m. - Win. Chicago has plenty of Steelers fans and Cutler doesn't make the team that much better.
3. Sun, Sept. 27 at Cincinnati Bengals 1 p.m. - Win. Do you need an explanation?
4. Sun, Oct. 4 vs. San Diego Chargers 8:20 p.m. - Loss. This could be a tough one, even though it's at home. I mean...we have to lose some time, right?
5. Sun, Oct. 11 at Detroit Lions 1 p.m. - Win. I won't even bother to analyze this game.
6. Sun, Oct. 18 vs. Cleveland Browns 1 p.m. - Win. The Browns a rebuilding and will not have it together this year.
7. Sun, Oct. 25 vs. Minnesota Vikings 1 p.m. - Win. Adrian Peterson won't be able to run on that slick track he's used to in Minnesota.
8. Bye - Good timing. Right in the middle of the season.
9. Mon, Nov. 9 at Denver Broncos 8:30 p.m. - Win. We come off the bye week firing on all cylinders.
10. Sun, Nov. 15 vs. Cincinnati Bengals 1 p.m. - Win. Again, no explanation needed.
11. Sun, Nov. 22 at Kansas City Chiefs 1 p.m. - Win. The Chiefs stink.
12. Sun, Nov. 29 at Baltimore Ravens 8:20 p.m. - Win. Here's the game all of the Baltimore fans have been crying for. Well, you got your wish. Here we come. In your house. In prime time. Outcome still the same.
13. Sun, Dec. 6 vs. Oakland Raiders 1 p.m. - Win. In order for the Raiders to be any good, Al Davis has to leave.
14. Thu, Dec. 10 at Cleveland Browns 8:20 p.m. - Win. IT'S THE BROWNS!
15. Sun, Dec. 20 vs. Green Bay Packers 1 p.m. - Loss. Green Bay could be a good team this year. Plus, by this time, we already have 12 wins. Let's take it easy before clinching the North Division next week.
16. Sun, Dec. 27 vs. Baltimore Ravens 1 p.m. - Win. Steelers clinch the Division against the Ravens for the second year in a row. Keep crying.
17. Sun, Jan. 3 at Miami Dolphins 1 p.m. - Loss. We rest our starters for the final two quarters and play it like a preseason game. The Dolphins will probably be playing this game as a "win and you're in game".

That's a 13-3 season and should be good enough for a first round bye in the playoffs. The only team that may finish ahead of us is the Patriots due to the "Golden Boy's" return.

In other Steelers news, Charlie Batch has reportedly re-signed with the team for a one-year contract worth $745,000, plus a $50,000 signing bonus. Pittsburgh wasted no time in going after the hometown QB after Tampa Bay signed Byron Leftwich.

Pirates
The Pirates have struck a deal to bring 26 year-old outfielder Delwyn Young from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for two minor league players to be named later. He was one of the players that would have been involved if the Pirates would have sent Jack Wilson to the Dodgers. I like that the Buccos are making some moves to try to improve the team, but another outfielder? That, I don't understand. We need pitching and power bats. We'll see what this kid can do. There is no word yet on if he will be added to the 25-man roster.

Penguins

The playoffs start tonight against the Flyers. If you know anything about this rivalry, you should kn that it will be a tough on for the Pens. However, I think they can get it done. Pens in five games.

A Special Day For The City Of Pittsburgh

Pirates
It was the Pirates 2009 home opener. PNC Park was packed with 38,000 fans. The fallen police officers were deservedly honored by the organization. Nate McClouth received his Gold Glove. Then, the game started. Zach Duke trotted out to the mound as if he knew that he was going to throw the incredible game that he did. Duke finished his complete game shutout giving up just four hits. The Pirates have always needed quality pitching. So far this year, they have gotten it. The staff has an era of 2.70. That's second lowest in the majors! The bullpen has pitched relatively well. And as for Zach Duke, he now has an era of 0.59. I will say it again...0.59! Are we seeing the pitcher everybody thought he would become just a few years ago? We will see. It's still very early in the season, but the Buccos have gotten quality starts in six of their seven games.
Yesterday was very much about the pitching, but the bats came through in a big way too. It was one of those games where everything comes together for a team (a rarity for the Pirates). The offense started early in the first inning with a Freddy Sanchez double and an eventual Ryan Doumit single that scored Freddy. Freddy started a big inning again in the third with another double. Hopefully this is the return of "Steady" Freddy. McClouth singled him home followed by an Adam LaRoche homer. LaRoche has hit the ground running this season breaking away from his habitual April slumps. Lightning Morgan finished the five-run inning with a Miguel Tejada muffed grounder that scored two runs. Doumit homered in the eighth to cap off the 7-0 win over the struggling Astros. "This is fun right now," Doumit said. "We're playing to the level that I know this team is capable. You couldn't ask for a better game, a better atmosphere. We heard the fans the whole game. We're looking forward to more of it, to be honest." Right now being the key words in that quote. "I think people are going to be surprised, and they're going to be very competitive this year," Houston first baseman Lance Berkman said of the Pirates. "A lot of it boils down to the starting pitching, and theirs is pretty young. If it can be consistent ... they have a balanced lineup, guys who give you trouble up and down it. If their pitchers keep them in the game, they're going to be tough." I sure hope so Lance.


Steelers
I'm sure by now that you have heard the Steelers signed James Harrison to a contract extension worth $51,175,000 over the next six years. Although he is already 30, he has only been a starter for the past two years. He really has a "rags to riches" story, doesn't he? He was undrafted, cut three times (also cut by Baltimore...I'll send them a Terrible Towel to cry on), practice squad, special teams, replace Joey Porter, help the Steelers win a sixth Super Bowl with an interception that was the longest play in Super Bowl history, become the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and cash in. Wow! Did you get all of that? When the Steelers let Joey Porter go, a lot of people questioned the move. How's it working out? I never question the way the Steelers do business. They have been consistently good for so long. Who is anybody to judge the way they run things? The Steelers will have a press conference regarding the Harrison extension this afternoon.


Mock Draft
Remember my last mock when I said that I didn't see any action happening until or after draft day? Well, some things have changed. Chicago no longer has pick 18. They gave that to Denver via the Jay Cutler trade. Also, not that it would effect my draft, Byron Leftwich is now in Tampa Bay. Penguins
The playoffs start tomorrow night at 7pm for the Pens. They have home ice vs. the Flyers. The team seems to be rallying around Coach Bylsma and coming together at the right time. I can also see them becoming a tougher team. When you see your franchise star drop the gloves, it sets a physicality standard for the entire team. Let's hope they can carry their recent string of success into the playoffs.

Raise The Jolly Roger

I don't know how much I'll get to say it this year so, I'll just say it now. Raise that Jolly Roger! The Pirates won their season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday by the score of 6-4. What an exciting game it was! If you are a baseball fan (you don't even have to be a Pirates fan) and you missed that game because you were tuned in to watch the Yankees vs. Orioles, you should be kicking yourself today. The game was won in the top of the ninth with a Jack Wilson base-clearing double. Here's how it went down: With the bases loaded, Pirates down 4-2, and two outs Jack Wilson came to the plate. Now, keep in mind, he's not the greatest hitter and he was 0-4 with two strikeouts on the day. Surely, I was thinking Craig Monroe would be coming to the plate. However, to my surprise and probably a chorus of Pirates fans watching at home screaming for someone to come in and pinch hit, Jack Wilson stepped into the batter's box to battle the flame-throwing Jason Motte. Pitch one: 96 mph fastball...a swing and a miss. Pitch two: 96 mph fastball...foul tip. With the count 0-2, Motte threw Jack another 96 mph fastball. As I watched the pitch leave his hand, I thought the game was over. Another Jack Wilson strikeout. Four men stranded on base. Game goes to the Cardinals. And then I heard a crack. Jack smoked the ball into left-center field for a double which cleared the bases and gave the Pirates a 6-4 lead. What a game!
With all of that, what more could you ask for as a Pirates fan? How about Paul Maholm's performance going 6 2/3 innings, charged with two runs and seven hits, and an on base percentage of 1.000? What about "Lightning" Nyjer Morgan going 3-5 from the leadoff spot? Still not enough? Well there was Eric Hinske and Ramon Vasquez proving they could provide some offense coming off the bench. And, finally, Matt Capps striking out Ryan Ludwick for the final out of the game. That's enough for this Pirates fan. Now, let's put this all into perspective, Everything came together yesterday. Will that happen every game? No, but it did yesterday. So, today, I'm going to enjoy it. In yesterday's blog I asked for the Pirates to show me some promise. Well, they delivered. I will take this opportunity to simply say "Thank You".

Pitt Basketball

Congratulations to Jamie Dixon for winning the Naismith national coach of the year award. It was well deserved. Next up for the Panthers, DeJuan Blair's announcement on whether he will stay at Pitt or go to the NBA. In March, Blair said that his decision would be determined by Pitt's play in the tournament. I hope he comes back, but if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on the NBA. Blair will not hire an agent and has until 10 days before the NBA Draft in June to pull his name out of the Draft.

Other News

Congratulations to former Xavier head coach and fellow BVM graduate, Sean Miller on accepting the Arizona job. I think he is a great young coach and he will be good for the declining Arizona men's basketball program. Best of luck to Coach Miller.

Today it starts. No more talk about prospects. No more talk about roster moves. No more talk about how well the Pirates will do this year. Today is Opening Day. It is time for the Pirates to put up or shut up. I am sick of hearing about how this year will be different. It is time for the Pirates to show me that all of the trades from the end of last season paid off. Show me some promise in these young guys! Will this year be any different than the last 16?! Or is this just the beginning of that long, 162 game, Green Mile walk toward a 17th straight losing season? Only time will tell. It starts today in St. Louis. Here are the starting lineups:

And Then There Was One...

I only have one team still in it! Here is what's left of my bracket:

Pitt Basketball
As all of the other Pitt fans out there, I am disappointed about the loss. Now is the time for everyone to start pointing the blame. I don't claim to know everything about sports, as some fans do. However, I will tell you why Pitt lost that game. FREE THROWS! Villanova hit 96% of theirs, while Pitt only hit about 70%. Hat's off to Villanova. No team ever hits 96%. But, they are called free throws for a reason...they are free. You have a clear shot at the basket. No one's in your face. No Sam Young pump fake needed. You don't even have to dribble if you don't want to. I never understood how national recruits, blue-chip stars, could only be 60% from the line. I could hit 6 out of 10! In fact, when I played, that wasn't even good enough for me to make the team! If Pitt hits just two more against Villanova, they dance all the way to Detroit. The game should have never gotten to that last play and Pitt's sorry attempt to stop Scottie Reynolds.


Pirates
Now, since basketball is over and football is on hiatus until the draft (at least on the South Side), I will start to pay more attention to the Buccos and the annual "I think we have a real shot to go .500 this season". I'll leave the .500 talk to everyone else. Thus, my gripes will be starting early this year. What the ---- are they thinking sending Andrew McCutchen to the minors! He is clearly a player to build the future around, if indeed that is what they are planning on doing. Pirates general manager Neal Huntington admits that McCutchen is doing almost everything right. However, he still feels the need to have this kid start the season in the minors. Huntington states, "Andrew came into camp with the motivation that he was going to do some things to open our eyes, and he's done that. But you don't make a short-term decision with long-term ramifications. Organizations make mistakes when they send a player to the majors because he's their best option. Andrew right now is our best defensive outfielder, and he's done other good things. But we want him to be a complete player." Now, maybe this logic is good for pitchers because you don't want them to try to do too much and end up like Kerry Wood. The Rays are doing this with their top pitching prospect David Price. But, McCutchen is an outfielder. He's only 21 years old. He'll be fine. I understand getting him his reps in the minors if they feel he is not ready to start. But, when will it be time to bring him up? The depth in the outfield is too deep. If this were my team, I'd start McCutchen, have Hinske come off the bench, then trade Hinske toward the end of the season for some starting pitching (God knows we need it) and/or a shortstop prospect. Hisnke's a veteran. He has to have some value. Besides, I don't see them keeping him after this year. The Buccos have veterans in the outfield in McClouth and Craig Monroe (who I think they should pay to keep around). And they have Jose Tabata to bring up after the Hinske trade goes through. I just don't understand this. By the way, all of this comes after McCutchen's 5-5 day against the Phillies that included a home run and a few doubles. I watched that game. The kid looks ready. Pull the trigger!

It May Not Look Pretty, But Pitt Finds A Way To Win

Pitt finally got over that Sweet 16 hump that has seemed just too high to clear for the past couple of years. Their win last night sure wasn't pretty, but it was effective. The Panthers found themselves having to come from behind again last night against Xavier. However, when they needed a boost, who did they do to? Levance Fields. Hold on...let me say that again. Levance Fields! Is this guy clutch or what? He is the best point guard in the country, regardless of what the stat sheet says. He is a floor general, which is a very underrated attribute in basketball today. Fields also has a knack for hitting the big shot, as he did last night. He has hit that step-back 3-pointer consistently throughout his career at Pitt. It's sure going to be hard to replace him...which is what I thought when Brandin Knight left. Good luck from here on out boys.

News And Notes 3/24/2009

Here's how my bracket is doing:

35-13 after two rounds is not too bad...it's not great either. It also doesn't help that I am starting the next round with a loss (Clemson). I am beating President Obama, who is 33-15.

Pitt Basketball

Congratulations to both Pitt men's and women's teams for reaching the Sweet 16! For the men, this has been a trap game over the past couple of years. If they don't turn the ball over, hit their free throws, and FEED BLAIR THE BALL, they should have no problem moving on.

Steelers

Steelers Hall of Fame wide receiver, John Stallworth, is now part owner of the team. He was approved yesterday along with two other new partners, Bruce V. Rauner, chairman of GTCR Golder Rauner, LLC and the Varischetti family of Brockway, Jefferson County. Stallworth is the president and CEO of Genesis II. This brings the count to six the new partners the NFL has approved for the realignment of Steelers ownership under Dan and Art Rooney II.

Pirates

Neal Huntington has not been happy with the production of the leadoff sport in the batting order, and he has made it public. However, I am big on having a leadoff guy that can get on base and do some damage. Therefore, I have been in favor batting Nyjer Morgan in that spot. While his hitting needs some work, his speed makes up for it. Anytime hes gets on base, he's a threat to steal his way to third. When was the last time the Buccos had a guy like that. Have you seen this kid run? I'm going to start calling him "Lightning". Think about what Ichiro does at the top of the lineup. Sure, he's a better hitter than Lightning, but Ichiro is only a slap-hitter, similar to many lefty softball players. He gets most of his hits because his speed allows him to beat out so many infield hits. Will Lightning ever be as good as Ichiro? Probably not, but if they can make Lightning into an effective slap-hitter, he could have a very productive career at the top of the order.

Pitt Basketball
As expected, Pitt received a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. However, they are the #1 seed in the East region. The East, in my opinion, is the toughest region. The East includes Pitt, Oklahoma St. (they seem to be on a roll), Florida St. (played Duke in the ACC Championship after defeating North Carolina), Duke (never count them out), UCLA, and Villanova. This has the potential to be the most interesting region in the entire tournament. I see four teams (Pitt, Duke, UCLA, Nova) in this region that have the talent to win the whole thing! It should be exciting. Let's hope that Pitt can break the Sweet 16 curse.

Robert Morris Basketball

The Colonials were dealt a #15 seed in the Midwest region. They will play the #2 seeded Michigan St. Bobby Mo has a tough game ahead of them, but I think they will embrace it. Coach Mike Rice explains, "I'm not sane. I cannot be sane because think about this statement I am about to make. I am actually thrilled, beyond belief, to be going to Minneapolis and taking a college basketball team to play against Michigan State. Just think about that for one minute. Who in their right mind would ever say that? But for us, the hard part was getting here and now, there is no fear in our hearts. There can't be." I'll be rooting for them even though I can't pick them in my bracket.

It's good to see the young talent. However, why not work them into the roster? I mean, it's not like the Pirates have any real stars. Sure, they have guys with potential, but what about the young guys? Bring them up, let them figure out how to win at the pro level, and develop them into future stars. Many of them are FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS!

Penguins
The Pens continued their run for the playoffs yesterday with a 6-4 win over Boston. They now sit in 5th place in the East and seem to be coming together at the right time.

Where The **** Did They Get Those Refs

Pitt Basketball
Yes. Pitt lost to WVU by 14. I'm sure it's not how they wanted to go out of the Big East Tournament, but now they can rest up for a run at the national title. I would have liked to see them play better. Pitt never found a rhythm, especially against that 1-3-1 zone. They had too many turnovers. The list goes on and on about why they lost. And hats off to Bob Huggins and WVU. They outcoached, outplayed, and outhustled the Panthers. However, the loss is not what I had a problem with last night. WHERE THE **** DID THEY GET THE REFS FOR THIS GAME! I mean, I'm not blaming the loss on the refs as I do not believe the outcome of any game should rest on their shoulders. I am, however, say that this was one of the worst officiating crews I have ever seen! First they call the game loose, then tight, then loose again? It was absolutely atrocious. And it went both ways. If this was a Big East officiating crew, the conference should be embarrassed.


Pirates
The Pirates' Craig Monroe went 3-3 yesterday against the Twins, with only hits coming as home runs. His first two home runs came off of starter Scott Baker, and his third off of Kevin Mulvey. Monroe is making a strong case to make the roster, especially with Brandon Moss' injury leaving a void in right field. I think Monroe could really help the Pirates this year, as there is little to no power coming out of the corner outfield positions. The Pirates have depth in the outfield, so it may be a trying task to get all of these players time in the field. We'll have to see how that all turns out. Monroe is 32, making him an elder on the team. However, if he continues to play as consistently as he has in Bradenton, it will be hard for the team to sit him on the bench.


Duquesne Basketball
The Dukes advanced to the A-10 Tournament semifinals with a 78-74 win against #2 seed Rhode Island. This season marks the first time Duquesne has won 20 games since 1981. The Dukes try to keep their hopes of reaching the NCAA Tournament alive tonight when the square off against Dayton.


Penguins
The Pens suffered a 4-3 loss to Columbus last night in a shootout. Although the Penguins lost, they still squeezed a point out of the game and remain in 6th place in the Eastern Conference. The loss snapped a seven game winning streak.

Bobby Mo Goes Dancin'

Usually, I start the blog off with Steelers or Pitt news, but today, the big news comes from the smaller schools in the Greater Pittsburgh Area.

Robert Morris Basketball
The Colonials have punched their ticket into the "Big Dance" by winning the Northeast Conference (NEC). Robert Morris beat Mount St. Mary's 48-46 on Dallas Green's loose ball baseline jumper with 2.5 seconds left on the clock. This is their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1992 and there is some speculation that they will receive a 14 seed.

Duquesne Basketball
The Dukes are keeping their hopes alive for a bid to the NCAA Tournament. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a 91-81 win against UMass.

They have signed backup Outside linebacker, Andre Frazier, to a two-year deal worth $1.375 million. Now, you see why I started off the blog with Bobby Mo and The Dukes.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go

Pitt Basketball
Well...Pitt fans hope he stays. We might just get our wish. DeJuan Blair has been named the Big East's Co-Player of the Year, sharing the award with UConn's Hasheem Thabeet. Yes, the same guy he body slammed the first of the two times Pitt beat a #1 ranked UConn this season. That alone should make Blair the sole owner of the award, but I won't get into that discussion. Blair also provided the "Zoo" with some good news:

"I want to stay at Pitt, just so everybody can say, 'We loved him,'" Blair said. "It's up in the air. It depends on this year. But I want to stay." He also stated, "I want my jersey to be retired like Brandin". "That's an inspiration to look up and see your jersey every day. Just to stay and be loved in Pittsburgh. ... I'm always going to come back. I'm always going to be here."

Blair is a projected first-round pick in the upcoming NBA draft, should he decide to leave Pitt.


Steelers
The Steelers have signed their right tackle Willie Colon to a one-year contract. Colon, a restricted free agent, had recently been offered a tender of $2,198,000 by the Steelers. This tender would have brought in a first-round draft choice had Colon signed on with another team and the Steelers did not match that offer. I believe that Colon is one of the bright spots on a very dim offensive line. However, I believe he is playing out of position. To me, Colon would be better suited at right guard. If the Steelers can bring in a competent tackle through the draft or free agency, we might just see Colon move to right guard. I'm just not sold on Darnell Stapleton.

Titans' free agent corner, Chris Carr, will visit the Steelers today. This would be a great signing for the Steelers. Not only could he provide some much needed depth at corner, he could provide a spark in the return game. Carr finished the 2008 season averaging 28.1 yards per kick return (3rd in the AFC) and 10.1 yards per punt return (8th in the AFC). Carr was a Raider before signing on with Tennessee last season. During his three seasons in Oakland, he returned 201 kickoffs for 4,841 yards (24.1 average), becoming the Raiders' career kickoff return leader. He has never returned a punt or kick for a touchdown. However, he did return a kick 62 yards in his rookie season (2005). The Steelers were 29th in kick-return average last season, and 31st in punt-return average. They NEED to find a return specialist. Carr would fill that void.

Ever since the new guys got here, the Pens have done nothing but win! They beat the Florida Panthers last night in a 4-3 shootout victory. That makes seven in a row for the Pens and moved them ahead of Florida into 6th place in the East. Good move bringing in Bylsma?

How Bout Dem Panthers

Pitt beat a #1 UConn AGAIN over the weekend! Clearly we know who the best team in the Big East is...regardless of what Louisville's conference record shows. Don't get me wrong, Louisville is a very good team that will make a run at an NCAA championship. However, does anyone really think that they are the best in the Big East?

All you Big East fans get ready for a treat. The Big East tournament should produce some of the best basketball of the season. I will definitely be tuning in over the next week, as should the entire country. I’m interested to see how the Big East tournament turns out, though. Anyone who follows college basketball knows that the Big East is the best overall conference in the NCAA. Anyone could win this thing! I know it would be nice to win the Big East, and Pitt gives it their all every year. But, THEY ARE IN THE DANCE ALREADY! Pitt will be a #1 seed, and possibly, the overall #1. Play some of the young guys. Get them some experience playing with the starters. There is no need to get anyone hurt. Give the starters a break. This tournament should be played like the last preseason game for an NFL team. Play the starters for a half or so, and then get the bench players some time. You never know who you will need come tourney time. It's time for a cram session on how to win without DeJuan Blair.

Congrats to Sam Young and DeJuan Blair for making the Big East first team. Congrats to Levance Fields too, as he made third team. Clearly this is a disservice because it is based clearly on stats. I'd take Fields as my point guard over every other point guard in the country.

Great regular season guys! Let's carry it into the postseason.

Steelers' free agent corner Bryant McFadden has signed with the (Pittsburgh South) Arizona Cardinals. I mean, doesn't anyone else think it is ironic that Arizona was so bad for so long, then they brought in a few Steelers coaches and players, and made it to the Super Bowl? Even more ironic is that they lost to the Steelers in that Super Bowl. Anyway, it is a two-year $10 million deal with $5 million guaranteed. I'm ok with this move. I liked him, but with William Gay ready to step up and start, it was pretty obvious that the Steelers weren't going to show McFadden the money. Ever since the Steelers drafted Gay, I have been a fan. I see a lot of Ike Taylor in this kid. He has good size and speed, but his ball skills could use a little work. I don't mind this move as long as they draft a corner this year and next. Deshea Townsend isn't getting any younger and the Steelers could use some young depth at the position.

On another note, free agent reciever Joey Galloway is visiting witht the Steelers today. I know that they lost Nate Washington, and they don't know what they will have with Limas Sweed, but Galloway only appeared in nine games last season due to injuries. He's also 37 years old! I understand bringing in free agents, but the Steelers have two veteran recievers in Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes. I just don't understand this visit. You mean to tell me that there are no young free agent recievers to fill in that 3rd or 4th spot? I highly doubt they sign him. How about bringing in a reciever that can return kicks?

Penguins

Finally, it pays to have Sid in a shootout. Crosby scored the clinching goal in a 4-3 shootout win yesterday against the Washington Capitals. The win capped off a road trip in which the Pens were perfect, finishing 5-0. Since acquiring Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz, things have been looking up for the Pens. They have now moved into 8th place in the Eastern Conference and look ready to make a playoff run.

Pirates

The Pirates say right fielder Brandon Moss should be ready for the season opener after injuring his thumb on a diving attempt in the outfield Saturday. He suffered significant bruise and a mild sprain, according to X-rays and an MRI. The opener will be April 6 in St. Louis.

The Pirates have trimmed their Spring Training roster by four players, right-handed reliever Romulo Sanchez, catcher Miguel Perez, pitcher Daniel Haigwood, and infielder Pedro Lopez. Sanchez was optioned down to Triple-A Indianapolis. Perez, Haigwood, and Lopez were reassigned to minor league camp. Still, no big news out of Bradenton. Expect more in the upcoming weeks as the team will try to sort out its opening day roster.

Yesterday I said that Jeff Saturday had told an agent that he wanted to play in Pittsburgh. That may have been true...a few days ago. Yesterday he re-signed with the Colts. It probably doesn't matter anyway as the Steelers are never big players in free agency. I mean, they didn't pay big money to Alan Faneca because he was over 30. The Steelers also released Kendall Simmons yesterday, probably because of his recent injury history. I'm still interested to see what the Steelers will do in order to sure up that line. I think they have to go after a free agent lineman or two AND draft some young guys.

The Steelers have reached an agreement with Chris Kemoeatu. They re-signed him for $20 million over the next five years. GREAT MOVE! Kemoeatu is shaping up to be a force at left guard. With the way things were sounding, I didn't think they could get him back. Thank God they did.


Pirates
The Buccos win again! They beat the Red Sox 3-2 yesterday in their second Spring Training game. This is about the time Pirates fans get excited for the season. They do this every year in Spring Training. Why can't they carry this into the season?


Penguins
The Pens traded Ryan Whitney to the to the Anaheim Ducks for winger Chris Kunitz and Chris Tangradi. This was a move to try to bring in some grittiness and toughness. Also, Tangradi was regarded as one of Anaheim's top prospects. Hopefully this move will bring back the edge they had last year and they could make a run at the playoffs.
